The National Football League’s Senior Vice President and Chief of Security, Cathy Lanier, will be recognized during the National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, LA on July 9-11, hosted by The University of Southern Mississippi’s National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4).
Lanier will receive the 2019 ‘Champion of Change’ Award, which recognizes an individual who has demonstrated their ability and commitment to bring about positive change in the sports safety and security industry. Through progressive leadership, this individual’s achievements have made a difference to organizational effectiveness and led the organization forward into the future. The ‘Champion of Change’ Award is sponsored by Aerial Armor, drone detection systems and drone intrusion analytics software.
Lanier has spent 26 years in law enforcement and counter-terrorism. Lanier rose through the ranks of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) becoming the first commanding officer of Homeland Security and Counter Terrorism for D.C. Police. In 2007, Lanier was selected as the departments first female chief and served until 2016, becoming the longest serving chief on the D.C. force. While with MPD she worked diligently to implement coordinated counterterrorism strategies and launched the department’s Operation TIPP (Terrorist Incident Prevention Program).
Now, as the Chief of Security for the National Football League, Lanier safeguards the security of all 32 NFL teams and their venues, liaises and collaborates with federal, state and local law enforcement, and ensures security for League events like the Super Bowl. As an innovative force in safety and security, Chief Lanier’s service continues to extend beyond the NFL to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, an independent government advisory body, and the Association for Unmanned Vehicles Systems International Blue Ribbon Task Force, a group tasked with refining policy and procedure for UAS incursions at airports.
